This list of button manufacturers and their button back marks might be helpful when dating buttons. It's from an interesting thesis by Sarah Elizabeth Marcel of The University of Tennessee - Knoxville "Buttoning Down the Past: A Look at Buttons as Indicators of Chronology and Material Culture."

Hi, I was researching an old brass button when I saw your site. I live near West Chester, PA. The face says 'Mullin & Loomis, West Chester '. And the back 'H & G, Phila & N.Y.' I'm assuming H & G is Hyde & Goodrich, but I can't determine if Mullin & Loomis is from West Chester PA or West Chester NY. Any help greatly appreciated

Of course, even though I've been trying to research the Mullin & Loomis button for a while, as soon as I sent you a request for help,I found the information that they were a clothier on Gay Street in West Chester, PA. I will try and give it to Historical Society if desired. Thank you for your site and consideration.
