Sometimes it's hard to get attention at an event. It is often not enough to just set up a table and try to draw potential button lovers to you. To create some fun at an upcoming "History Day" I transformed a couple of Burger King crowns into photo opportunities as "Button Queen" and "Button King" for event-goers. A guest can either take a selfie or have one of our members take a photo of him or her or both.

I lucked upon this pretty blue frame with gold trimming in a thrift store not long ago.
It turned out to be the perfect way to make some of my lovely blue buttons pop! Anne Buckingham and I had a lot of fun being interviewed by Virginia Johnson of Bay News 9. We really appreciate the station's coverage of our Florida State Button Society Meeting & Show. You can watch it here: www.baynews9.com/fl/tampa/entertainment/2019/01/18/ott-florida-state-button-society-annual-show
... I believe the 2019 Florida State Button Society Meeting, Show & Sale can help change that image and your mind. (Click the image to the left for an idea of what I am talking about!) Spend a few hours at “Escape from the Zoo” Jan. 17-20, 2019, and gaze upon approximately 1 million buttons from centuries ago to modern that will be on display and sale. It's going to be held at the Sheraton Tampa Brandon, 10221 Princess Palm Ave., Tampa, FL 33610. Showroom entrance fee for adults is just $5. Buttons of all prices, materials and ages will be offered for sale by approximately 25 button vendors. The show is attended by hundreds of button collectors and enthusiasts from Florida and other states. Members of the FSBS compete for prizes with cards full of specifically-themed buttons. The Bay Area Button Club is hosting the state show. For more information, visit https://floridastatebuttonsocietyshow.weebly.com or Florida State Button Society on Facebook. I don't think I have ever heard the word "basque" in reference to what Wikipedia defines as in Victorian fashion, "a closely-fitted bodice or jacket extending past the waistline over the hips."
But, because I have recently published a book of poems: Haiku for Button Lovers on Amazon, when I came across the poem, "My Grandmother's Basque," in the 1952 book Return Engagement of BLACK Glass Buttons by Caroline Smith and Edith E. Fuoss, I was totally charmed! The poem was written by Myrtle Eve Stadon and I present it below as it was seen on page 11 of the book. Vanity buttons are also sometimes called signature buttons or designer buttons. They are patterned with a name, initial or logo, which belongs to an individual, company, event, personality or store. Vanity buttons started in the 1970s. At first they were used on expensive men's clothing, but before too long were being used on women's and children's clothes. Collections of vanity buttons can be sorted into six categories, according to Pat Olsen in her NBS Bulletin article:
Vanity buttons may become scarce in the future! One reason is because clothing is so often just thrown away. In addition, fashion's star designers are aging and dying. Hunting for these buttons made for a fun Scavenger Hunt for several members of the Hernando County Button Collectors Group in Florida recently. A Goodwill Super Store was our hunting ground! I had a wonderful time at the 2018 National Button Society Convention last week. My presentation, "The History of Buttons: Why We Collect the Little Works of Art," attracted almost three dozen people! Afterwards, I sold 10 copies of my presentation in the narrated format. This makes me really happy because it tells me that the buyers will use it as a recruitment tool or at their local meetings. I attended most of the educational presentations and was, once again, overwhelmed by the huge-ness of the vendor showroom and the competition trays display. Whew! But here are photos of most of the buttons I got at the convention. To see photos from the Convention, look on Facebook under Florida State Button Society or the National Button Society.
